THE WONDER OF SEAGRASS

WHY SEAGRASS IS SO IMPORTANT FOR THE HEALTH OF OUR OCEANS AND THE PLANET

‘’Seagrasses are one of the most valuable and biodiverse habitats on the

planet and are one of the few habitats that provide multiple benefits to the environment.’’

CARBON CAPTURES

Seagrass captures carbon 35 times faster than rainforests and store 10% of the ocean’s carbon despite only covering 0.2% of the ocean floor, helping combat climate change.

SOCIAL BENEFIT

Seagrass meadows creates healthier environments for commercially important fish thus supporting local fishing business. The healthier the seagrass is, the healthier the fish will be, which ensures a notorious and healthy food source for local communities.

BIODIVERSITY HERO

One hectare of seagrass can support up to 80,000 fish and 100 million small invertebrates thus maintaining a healthy habitat for so many species, even endangered ones!

CHALLENGES

Seagrasses are declining by 7% per year globally, making it the fastest disappearing habitat on the planet.

Human impacts such as disturbances caused by boats anchoring and destructive fishing, as well as a lower water quality resulting from sewage and unsustainable agricultural activity, are causing the biggest issues.

Most boat users are not aware of seagrass locations thus not realising the harm they are doing. There is also a challenge with providing low impact alternatives for anchoring.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Getting down to specifics, we are supporting the protection and regeneration of the equivalent of 59 football pitches of seagrass with a £1 donation to the Ocean Conservation Trust for every bottle of Plymouth Gin sold in the UK. That will fund the laying of yellow buoys along the perimeter of the seagrass beds, indicating to those taking to the water, for work or play, that there’s “seagrass ahoy!”

So, if you want to start making changes sip by sip, take the first step and help us reach our donation target by buying your own limited edition bottle of Plymouth Gin.
